This year is the 400th anniversary of the opening of the Globe Theatre, where Shakespeare worked and where his greatest plays were first performed. But even with his amazing imagination, surely Shakespeare have in countries of which he'd never even heard. The annual international Globe to Globe festival is a celebration of the extraordinary range of artistic activity that Shakespeare's plays have engendered in the latter half of the twentieth century. It forms an integral part of the Globe's mission to explore the impact of Shakespeare on other cultures. Through partnership with international communities, Globe to Globe seeks to investigate how differing social cultural and political influences find expression through Shakespeare and to explore how the play are adapted and illuminated. This year following the successful Zulu Macbeth and Cuban Tempest which were brought to Bankside in 1997 and 1998, we are delighted to welcome the Annette Leday/Keli Company with their production of Kathakali-King Lear. But the Globe's international brief extends far beyond Globe concept of an 'arts centre' bringing together people of all ages and nationalities was fundamental to the vision of its American founder Sam Wanamaker Overseas visitors represent significant portions of the theatre and exhibition audiences. In addition, the Globe has affiliated overseas centres in the USA, Canada, Japan, Germany, Australia and New Zealand which develop fundraising and educational projects. GlobeLink, the international schools' association, keeps hundreds of students up to date via the internet And the new Shakespeare's Globe Exhibition, the largest exhibition in the world devoted to Shakespeare and his workplace, is due to open in January 2000, and will emphasise Shakespeare's role as a world poet. |
