Kathakali King Lear

After a long training in traditional Kathakali in India, Annette Leday has developed an original process of choreographic creation involving Indian and Western artists. In 1989, she directed Kathakali-King Lear in collaboration with playwright David McRuvie and the greatest Indian masters of Kathakali. In 1992, she choreographed La Sensitive and in 1995 Trans-Malabar, both contemporary pieces for five Indian dancers. And in 1998, she choreographed Cinderella Otherwise bringing together four Indian dancers and two Western contemporary dancers.

The innovative work of Annette Leday has been performed throughout India and at numerous theatres and festivals in Europe. In the UK, Kathakali-King Lear was presented at the Edinburgh Festival in 1990. La Sensitive was performed in 1993 and 1994 in London, Leicester, Bristol and Leeds and broadcast in its entirety on NDR and Arte Television. Trans-Malabar, co-produced by the Yorkshire Dance Centre Leeds, was presented in 1996 in Leeds, Leicester and Birmingham. Cinderella Otherwise was presented in India in 1998 on tour in Trivandrum, Bangalore, Pondichery, Madras, God, Hyderabad, Bombay, Ahmedabad Calcutta and New Delhi.

The Annette Leday/Keli Company is currently working with the German Bremer Shakespeare Company on a millennial version of The Tempest.
